Welcome to my corner of the digital world! I’m Pramod K. Sah, and I’m thrilled to have you here. As an enthusiast for Language and Literacy Education, I’ve embarked on an academic journey that has taken me across continents and through diverse educational landscapes.

I completed my PhD study in Language and Literacy Education from the University of British Columbia, Canada. During my time there, I was honored to be recognized as a Killam Laureate and also had the privilege of serving as a Sessional Lecturer. I am currently an Assistant Professor of English Language Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. Before joining The Education University of Hong Kong, I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Calgary’s Werklund School of Education. I am a Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Education, Language, and Ideology.

My connection to academia isn’t limited to a single institution; I’m also an Honorary Norham Fellow in the esteemed Department of Education at the University of Oxford, the United Kingdom. This transcontinental journey has allowed me to absorb and contribute to educational philosophies from around the globe.

Before my research career took flight, I spent five years teaching in elementary and secondary schools in Nepal. These experiences laid the foundation for my devotion to exploring critical applied linguistic issues (e.g., language planning and policy, translanguaging, affect, language ideology, and symbolic violence) within the realm of English-medium school education. This includes documenting how colonial and liberal ideologies in language policy and practices create socioemotional and educational disparities among diverse students. The central goal of his research is to conceptualize anti-oppressive and asset-based alternatives for pedagogies (e.g., linguistically and culturally sustaining pedagogies and critical translanguaging), research, and policies

My research strives to envision the materialization of UNESCO’s sustainable development goal of “inclusive and equitable quality education” through the instructional practices that affirm students’ most familiar languages and literacies. This research agenda has motivated me to examine (a) English as a medium of instruction (EMI) policy and practices and its impacts on social, emotional, and educational lived experiences of diverse students in multilingual schools, (b) affordances of multilingual and multimodal literacies for racialized ESL students, and (c) the effects of teacher language ideology and agency on raciolinguistic lived experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Through my work, I seek to expose the inequalities and injustices that often arise from colonial, racist, and liberal ideologies within education.
